Can I have an ISOFix seat slightly offset from the vehicle’s ISOFix points if another seat requires it?

This question was asked during our first Engineer’s Q&A with Andy Beaumont, ACRI’s representative to the Australian Standards committee – Here is how Andy responded:
Q: If a client requires 3 child seats fitted across the back of a vehicle, sometimes the outer seats *must* be slightly splayed out a little – which means that if the client wants to use ISOFix, the ISOFix mounting points can sometimes not line up neatly?
Andy B’s Response: “Slightly splayed out a little is fine and the ISOFix connector may not be in line with the actual anchor mounting points in the car. This is generally OK and will still function correctly in use and crash loads. Usually, the biggest issue is that the ISOFix strap can not be tightened enough and the seat is noticeably loose. If this is the case, then I would recommend installing with a seat belt instead, to ensure the child restraint is firmly installed. If the adjustment level means the ISOFix connector or its adjuster create a buckle crunch situation then I would definitely recommend installing with a seat belt only. Simply explain to the customer that you are not happy with the positioning of the connector or adjuster.”
NB: A key to note in Andy’s response is how he highlights the communication with the client – this is essential. As long as you communicate your intention, and why you’ve chosen this approach you will empower your client and minimise the chance of conflict.
