General Installation Guide

Choose the right words

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

It’s super easy to continue on old habits, especially ones that make sense in our own minds!  Times are changing though, and if we want to be able to be an influence in this industry then we should at least put the effort into our presentation.  Our words are important!  Below is a quick list of current ways to describe products you’ve probably been pronouncing the old fashioned ways since….forever!

Child Restraint (Old) / Child Car Safety Seat (New)

While this is a mouthful, it makes sense why child seats have recently been referred to by standards and manufacturers in Australia as “Child Safety Seats” or “Child Car Safety Seats”.  The negative connotation with “Restraint”, although that’s what it does, instead of the positive connotation with “Safety Seat” has been an easy thing to change in our daily language.  Parents, blogs and news articles have now done the same so especially in any written form of media it would be wise for your organisation update now, these little things do make a difference.

Vehicle Head Rest (Common Misuse) / Vehicle Head Restraint (New)

It’s a common term “Head Rest” because that’s what consumers use it as, but the head restraint of a vehicle was designed specifically to do that – restrain the passengers head from sever injury.  Although there are many articles in the KB about head rests, check this one out for an interesting read.

Locking Clip (Common) / 3 Bar Gated Buckle (Actual Name)

To be blunt, unless you are ordering these from a specific supplier that calls them a specific name, it doesn’t matter too much what you call these – over the years they’ve developed a slurry of hybrid names including Gated Bars, Locking Clips, Gated Slides, Seat Belt Locks, and more.  The design that is pictured is by far the most common, but they are also available in a flat design.
