General Vehicle Questions

How does a client turn an Airbag off?

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

Airbag’s are generally one of the easiest topics to talk about regarding kids safety – Check this Knowledgebase article here for an overview regarding airbags:

Generally your client will need to either;

  • Contact their dealer/workshop to get a technician/mechanic to professionally disengage the airbag of their vehicle OR
  • Take their vehicle to their local mechanic who may be able to perform this task

Mazda are one exception who recently have started introducing a feature that allows the client to disengage the front passenger airbag by pushing their vehicle’s key into lock mechanism located on the dash near their glove box.

The Mazda BT-50 comes in both a single cab and a dual cab, and is the same base as the Isuzu D-Max these days. This is a perfect example of a client using a commercial vehicle for personal transport of a child – they have the option built in as standard in their glove box to disable the front passenger airbag of their vehicle.

Why would my client need to do this?

See the article linked here regarding airbags, but generally this is only done in extremely unusual cases such as commercial vehicles that only have a single cab – and you client has no other choice but to transport an infant rearward facing. Now Mazda certainly deserve a huge kudos for simplifying this task and empowering their customers to be able to directly perform this task themselves without having to return the vehicle to the workshop for a technician to disengage the airbag. The dash should show the appropriate reminder warning lights so the driver is also warned if they forget to re-engage the airbag after the use.
