Are booster cushions/bum boosters still legal in Australia?

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

There are two issues here, if you’re question is in regards to an imported seat sold through eBay (Pictured Left) or some other poorly regulated site then see also this article that relates to illegally sold and unregulated items here.

Otherwise if your question relates to an older booster seat cushion that is owned by a parent or carer then continue reading as well.

Short Answer:  No short answer.

Best Practice:  If a parent/carer has one already they may use them legally, but really they probably shouldn’t.

  • Booster cushions are no longer compliant with the new child safety seat standards and cannot be sold anymore
  • Older booster seat cushions with an Australian Standards approval label are still permitted to be used, if a parent or carer still has one
  • Recommended lifespan in Australia for these types of units was 10 years from DOM (Date of Manufacture) which will be printed on the cushion
  • On a practicality side they offer no side impact protection, are supremely inferior to current booster designs and were rightly removed from sale willingly by major Australian manufacturers.
  • Parents/carers who use these will run the risk of attracting attention from law enforcement trying to do the right thing, but perhaps not understanding that these are potentially still actually “legal” to use (Side note: There are many things that are legal…and not wise).
