Can I use an international/overseas child safety seat in Australia?
From time to time you’ll come across this question from travellers or ex-pats living in Australia, and in some cases the answer stuns them – particularly if they believe the child safety seats they’ve been using for years in their homeland are superior to Australia’s! The reality is though that Australia’s child safety seat standards are one of the stringent – worldwide!
Europeans are particularly surprised to hear us Aussies say this, but it’s true – Australia requires manufacturers to have their safety seats tested in side and rear impact tests, along with inverted or roll over tests. Australia also requires the upper tether to be anchored as well, which is generally unheard of overseas – we are a unique bunch!
Short Answer: No – To use a child safety seat in Australia it must comply with the Australian standards, and display the standard it complies with on the seat.
Best Practice: Ensure before you install, or begin any work on any child safety seat that it complies with the AS/NZ 1754 standards. See this article: How do I tell if a safety seat meets Australian standards?
