Specific Restraint Questions

Flying with your child seat stowed?

Estimated reading: 2 minutes

Transporting a child seat as stow away luggage on an aircraft can be a concern for many parents and caregivers, especially regarding its condition upon arrival.  While it may be best to hire a child seat at your destination, this option is not always available so here are some recommendations to help your child seat arrive at the destination safely:

  1. Check Airline 3 Policies
  • Although CASA has outlined standard recommendations, each airline has their own policies regarding the transportation of child seats.  Check with your airline’s customer service or website for their policy details including size restrictions, handling procedures, and whether fees apply.

2. Check Airline Policies

  • Invest in a padded travel bag specifically designed for child seats. This adds a layer of protection against mild bumps and scuffs during handling. Some bags are equipped with additional cushioning or hard shells for better protection.  Don’t forget to clearly label your child seat with your name, contact information and flight number.

3. Prior to Departure, Document Its Condition:

  • Before checking the seat in, take photos of it from various angles.  This can serve as evidence in case of damage during transport.

4. Arrive Early

  • Arrive at the airport early to ensure you have enough time to check in your child seat.  Your airline may consider a child seat as requiring  special handling procedures.

5. Check for Damage Upon Arrival:

  • As soon as you retrieve your child seat at your destination, inspect it thoroughly for any signs of damage. If you notice any issues, take photos and report it to the airline immediately.
